US Launches Genesis Mission - AI's "Manhattan Project"

πŸͺ« "ChatGPT-4 is the dumbest model any of you will ever, ever have to use again, by a lot.” - Sam Altman

Hello Reader,

The Genesis Mission, a new Ai initiative launched by U.S. President Donald Trump, has been framed by the administration as comparable in scale to the Manhattan Project. The program aims to accelerate scientific discovery by combining artificial intelligence with large federal research datasets.

The effort will apply Ai systems to data from agencies including NASA, the National Institutes of Health, and the Department of Energy. These datasets cover climate systems, oceans, space, materials science, and the human genome.

Officials say Ai could reduce discovery timelines from years to days by automating experiment design, accelerating simulations, and producing predictive models in areas such as protein folding, fusion energy, and advanced materials.

The Department of Energy has sixty days to identify twenty priority scientific challenges and ninety days to map national computing resources. It must demonstrate progress on at least one challenge within nine months.

The long-term goal is to double U.S. research productivity within a decade. Companies including Nvidia, OpenAI, Microsoft, IBM, Google, and Amazon Web Services are listed as collaborators, though funding and governance details have not yet been disclosed.

After Gemini 3 was released, Sam Altman declared a 'red alert' and reallocated programming resources to launch the latest version of ChatGPT - 5.2.

πŸͺž Let's reflect together

Every year, I have published an Annual Review on my personal website. I have a Google Doc template I've used, year after year, to ask myself these introspective questions on New Year's Eve.

If you'd like to get access to this Google Doc, and participate in guided journaling exercises, breakout room discussions, and copy/paste Ai prompting activities, I'm hosting a one-hour Zoom workshop on New Year's Eve at noon NZ time (10-11 am AU time, 3-4 pm Pacific time on Tuesday, the 30th).

It's $20 to attend. You can pay in NZD, AUD, or USD.

The companies that build this early will have an advantage that is hard to replicate, regardless of any new individual model capability." - Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft Hello Reader, The years I spent as a marketing automation strategist taught me to see the work move through a workflow, end-to-end. I find myself using those skills more frequently, as I hatch...

πŸ’Έ β€œThe cost to use a given level of AI falls about 10x every 12 months, and lower prices lead to much more use.” - Sam Altman Hello Reader, Last week I taught a half-day workshop in partnership with the Regional Business Partner Network at Enterprise North Canterbury. We gathered dozens of entrepreneurs and business owners together for an afternoon of AI training. They had heard the hype, seen the demos, and played around with a few tools. But they were still trying to understand how AI could...

They surveyed more than 1000 professionals, and they found that most people are still using AI like a random toolbox. They open ChatGPT, or Copilot, or Claude, or Gemini. They ask a question, get an answer, copy the useful bits, and move on. That’s fine. A...
