Live Training Cohorts vs Online Courses

Hello Reader,

Let’s face it, online courses are not that exciting.

Nobody has the problem on the Internet of ‘not enough information.’ There is an overload of information, on any topic you wish to research.

The bigger problem we all face is: ‘How do I get the information that is most relevant to my situation, right now?’

This is why having a live teacher available to answer your questions is so helpful.

Case Study: Khan Academy

You’ve probably heard of the Khan Academy. It’s a series of online tutorials that teach the subjects that kids learn in a classroom in school.

The great thing about Khan Academy (and other online courses) is that you can rewind a video as many times as you like, if you get confused by something. You can learn at your own pace, and spend as long or as little time as you like in a learning session.

This very flexibility is what makes online learning so difficult.

Khan Academy is often used in conjunction with live classroom learning, because videos alone are not enough to learn something well. When used in schools, students watch Khan Academy videos on their own time, and come together with a teacher in a classroom (or on Zoom) to practice what they have learned as a group.

The very things that make a classroom so valuable are completely absent from passive online courses.

  • A teacher available to answer your questions
  • A cohort of peers who are working through the material with you
  • Guidance towards the next steps to take

You can't get these benefits from watching videos on your own time. But combining online courses together with live cohorts provides the best of both worlds.

Marketing Yourself Intensive

The Cornerstone Workbooks, the companion course to my book Marketing Yourself, is a choose-your-own-adventure-style online course. You don’t complete all the workbooks in order - you decide which workbooks would be most helpful for you and for your business. Every lesson has a short video teaching you how to use the workbook, but the work is done by you.

As you know, doing your own marketing can be lonely. It sucks to spend all your time and energy putting together a marketing campaign that gets you no results.

If you could share that campaign with an experienced digital marketer, and gather feedback and insight, it could save you a lot of time and effort, and amplify your results.

The Marketing Yourself Intensive is a live cohort working through the Cornerstone Workbooks together, and the first group of up to 20 students will begin next week. If you’re interested, fill out this brief application form, and we will schedule a 1-on-1 call to talk about it together.

Not everyone who applies will be accepted into this program, but I’ll get on a 30-minute Zoom call with all applicants regardless. This is a great opportunity to pick my brain, and get my feedback on your personal platform.
